We recognize that a supportive atmosphere is essential for pregnant students and student parents to be successful. Title IX: Pregnant & Parenting students

Title IX prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy and parental status.

For students experiencing pregnancy-related conditions, in accordance with Title IX, ÐÔÊӽ紫ý:

  • Excuses a student’s absences because of pregnancy or childbirth for as long as deemed medically necessary.
  • Affords the same protections to pregnant students as students who have temporary medical conditions.
  • Makes reasonable and responsive adjustments.
  • Allows a student to continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities.
  • Allows a student to return from their leave to the same academic status as before their leave.
  • Offers options for making up the work missed and allow the student to decide.

Reasonable adjustments

The Disability Services Office and Title IX Office collaborate to assist students experiencing pregnancy-related conditions with reasonable physical and academic adjustments.

  • Breaks during class to express breast milk, breastfeed, or attend to health needs associated with pregnancy or related conditions, including eating, drinking, or using the restroom;
  • Intermittent absences to attend medical appointments;
  • Extensions of time for coursework and rescheduling of tests and examinations;
  • Allowing a student to sit or stand, or carry or keep water nearby;
  • Changes in physical space or supplies (e.g., access to a larger desk or a footrest);
  • Elevator access; or
  • Other changes to policies, practices, or procedures (e.g. incomplete grade, independent study, recorded lecture, note-taker)

ÐÔÊӽ紫ý offers dedicated spaces on campus to support student and employee parents with their breast, chest, or body-feeding needs.

To access the lactation room door code, please scan the QR code outside of the lactation room, sign in with your ÐÔÊӽ紫ý credentials, and you will be able to access the code(s). For more information about the lactation spaces, please contact titleix@msmu.edu
